Art Therapy Experience for Abused Adolescents: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study
Kim Young-A

Kim Gab-Sook
Abstract
This study explored the nature and meanings of the art therapy experiences of adolescents who have been abused. 112 crime reports were inspected to recruit adolescent participants who had experienced abuse and participated in art therapy through a Child Protection Agency. Data was collected until data saturation was reached and analyzed using Max van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological method. The findings revealed that participants begin art therapy with both expectations and a sense of burden. Art activities help participants form a therapeutic relationship and secure attachment with therapists. Art activities have the cathartic function of revealing inner feelings and thoughts, and expressing emotions. Participants may also reexperience abuse. Finally, through art therapy, participants experience growth through healing and recovery. These results can be used to provide the foundation for future research on the use of art therapy approaches in adolescents who have suffered abuse.
